Shut Up & Listen: Nicola

My name is Nicola but my friends call me Nic.

Coordination level: After many years of SU&D classes, I think my coordination level has upgraded to medium! 😂👍

I’m happiest when I am with my family... but also when I am eating chocolate 🍫😏

My favourite “guilty” pleasure song is Uptown Funk – it is my go-to at karaoke! 🎤

Best music video of all time is: MJ’s Thriller, of course! Those dance moves are ICONIC 🤌 I remember being absolutely terrified when I first saw the full Thriller music video (to be fair, I was 7!) but now I appreciate it for the genius that it is.

Something that I continually ask myself is what am I going to have for breakfast / lunch / dinner?!

SAAAAME!!! 🤔😋🤤

Why do you think dance is important? Honestly, Shut Up & Dance is the one thing I do every week that is completely for myself. It picks up my mood! Whether I’ve had a good day or a stressful day – dance will always make me happier. I think it is SO important to have something outside of work or family commitments that is just for you 🫶 and your mental wellbeing 😌 It could be running, baking, painting or anything that just completely absorbs you in that moment. For me – that’s dance 😌

And how does it show up in the other areas of your life? I recently got married and I won complimentary dance classes with First Dance (shout out to Kathryn!). We had our first dance choreographed to “Walking on Sunshine” and I was really comfortable learning a dance routine because of SU&D. Also, when it came to “performance” time on our wedding day, we had a few hiccups at the start but the SU&D mentality kicked in and we pulled off a strong finish! 💪

Something that has changed since my first Shut Up & Dance class is I really do just let it all go when I am in SU&D class. I used to be so focused on getting every step perfect, but now I just laugh off / embrace the mistakes. As all the SU&D teachers say – you just have to commit to the move and it will be great!

The Shut Up & Dance routine that best describes me is Rain on Me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande because it’s a bit cute and sassy at the same time ✌️

My life motto is always be kind to others, and to yourself.

My alter ego is one of the Kardashian sisters 😈 depending on my mood on the day! 😜

My favourite artist is … I think I would have to say the Spice Girls! Every single song is just amazing. Why did they break up?! I’m still not over it.

The most important thing life has taught me so far is that it’s full of surprises and curve balls but, as long as you surround yourself with good people, you can get through anything! 🙌

To pay the bills I am a lawyer, but my dream job would be a back-up dancer for Beyoncé. Would that not be the best job ever?!

If money was no object I would just hang out with my Mum all day 💓

My most dorky moment this week was doing a terrible / embarrassing parallel park in town in front of a whole group of cool young things on Friday night when I was off to the SU&D After Dark Course! 🤣

My most empowered moment this year was when I recovered and tested negative for Covid-19! That was such a good feeling.

I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. I just loved school so much! 🤓📚🧠

The world would be a better place… without Covid-19.

HEAR-YEE HEAR-YEE.

The routine I want to learn the most is … oh man, there’s so many. Schoolin’ Life by Beyonce. Gangnam Style by Psy. Anything from the 90s. Let’s do it!

If I was a cake I would be a tiramisu cake because I am basically made of coffee, chocolate and cream ☕️🍫🍦

SU&D HAS TO SAY: Nicola – it is SO special to hear how much value SU&D has bought to your life (and your wedding dance!), because you bring so much vibrancy & energy to our classes by just being you. We are so honored to have you be a defining part of who Shut Up & Dance is, and where we are going. You rock! 🤍
